For beginners, the completion of that first blanket, first scarf, first table cover, brings with it a joy that had been previously unknown. Fortunately for us all, there were a lot of books, magazines and patterns published between 1850 and 1950 that have documented, the crochet creations that are from the peak period of this craft.
I always buy an extra ball than is recommended in the pattern just in case you need a bit extra, most good yarn stores will accept them back if you've bought too many. Another good thing about crochet symbols is that they are international, so no matter where the pattern comes from, the symbols will usually be the same. At the time, knitting seemed over my head and maybe even a bit "granny-ish".
There are a large variety of patterns and stitches. It provides a healthy venue for women and even young girls to come together to share thoughts and exchange views while exchanging crocheting patterns. It's a good idea to go ahead and buy some additional crochet hooks or knitting needles since not all sizes are included in your kit.
Browse through the books to find one that is most user-friendly for you. As a beginner learning crochet, you will no doubt find a little frustration at times.
